What Is Viridans Streptococci?

Viridans streptococci are a large group of commensal streptococcal gram-positive bacteria species that are α-hemolytic because they produce a green coloration on blood agar plates.

History of Viridans Streptococci

In 1978, the first cases of viridans streptococci bacteremia in neutropenic patients with cancer were described at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, where 29 episodes of bacteremia were documented in adults and children.

That same year, 6 episodes of bacteremia were reported in children at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as well.

Since then, the isolation of viridans streptococci has become more frequent.

Recently in the early 21st century, scientific studies proved that viridans streptococci is found most abundantly in the mouth. However, one of its members, S. mutans, is the most common cause of dental caries.

Other members of these microorganisms cause several more diseases, including neonatal infections, subacute bacterial endocarditis, and gingival infections as pericoronitis.

Furthermore, we have recently discovered that viridans streptococci are developing resistance to antibiotics.

Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Viridans Streptococci

Since viridans streptococci can cause multiple diseases like endocarditis, pericarditis, and peritonitis, the symptoms vary completely depending on the disease.

For instance, people who catch endocarditis typically suffer from the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Shortness of breath
  • Aching joints and muscles
  • Chest pain when breathing
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fever and chills

In comparison, pericarditis has no similar symptom:

  • Cough
  • A low fever
  • Heart palpitations
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Shortness of breath when reclining
  • Sharp, piercing chest pain over the center or left side of the chest that is usually more intense when inhaling

Although none of those symptoms are serious, health experts say that all diseases caused by viridans streptococci can lead to more serious conditions if they’re not treated right away.

How You Can Treat Viridans Streptococci

Since viridans streptococci is developing resistance to antibiotics, there’s no knowing whether the medicine that can treat it today will work tomorrow.

Currently, doctors prescribe parenteral therapy with either penicillin G or ceftriaxone with or without an aminoglycoside, or with vancomycin alone.

All that being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by viridans streptococci, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment.

You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of facing a problem caused by viridans streptococci?

If you’re now wondering what safety precautions we are talking about, disinfecting your home and workplace with a solution that can kill viridans streptococci is all you need to do.
