What Is Trichosporon SP?

Trichosporon is a genus of anamorphic fungi belonging to the family Trichosporonaceae. All of its species are yeasts with no known teleomorphs (sexual states).

History of Trichosporon SP

In 1890, the genus Trichosporon was first described by a German dermatologist named Gustav Behrend, who was studying sexual diseases at the Municipal Dispensary, Berlin.

He isolated the first species of Trichosporon from the hairs of a moustache where they were causing the condition known as white piedra.

Since his discovery, researchers from all over the world have been conducting dozens of scientific studies on the Trichosporon genus each year.

Through those studies, we have found out that there are over a hundred additional yeast species of Trichosporon, many of which are widespread.

However, with the arrival of DNA sequencing, it was proven that many of the additional species belong to other genera. Currently, only forty species are accepted in the genus.

Furthermore, DNA sequencing has also shown us that multiple Trichosporon species can cause white piedra, and some can even cause more serious diseases like trichosporonosis.

It has also proven that several Trichosporon species occur naturally as part of the microbiota of human skin — meaning they’re already present on our bodies.

Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Trichosporon SP

Since different species of the genus Trichosporon can lead to different health issues, the symptoms vary depending on the condition we’re talking about.

However, in the vast majority of cases, Trichosporon sp causes trichosporonosis — which is a systemic disease that affects immunosuppressed individuals.

Patients of trichosporonosis typically suffer from the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Erythematous papules
  • Extremities that can sometimes form bullae

Although none of those symptoms are serious, health experts say that trichosporonosis can lead to permanent damage to the immune system if it’s not treated right away.

How You Can Treat Trichosporon SP

Since Trichosporon sp is developing resistance to antibiotics, there’s no knowing whether the medicine that can treat it today will work tomorrow.

Currently, doctors typically pursue a combination therapy of high-dose amphotericin B (deoxycholate or liposomal) with either or both 5-flucytosine or voriconazole.

All that being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by a species of the genus Trichosporon, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment.

You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of facing a problem caused by Trichosporon sp?

If you’re now wondering what safety precautions we are talking about, disinfecting your home and workplace with a solution that can kill Trichosporon sp is all you need to do.
