What Is Trichophyton SP?

Trichophyton is a genus of widespread fungi with parasitic varieties that cause several forms of tinea, including athlete’s foot, ringworm, and jock itch.

History of Trichophyton SP

Although there are no records of the exact year when the genus Trichophyton was formed, we know that it was in the late 18th or early 19th century.

The most popular species of the genus Trichophyton is T. rubrum, which is the most common agent of dermatomycoses isolated from humans.

Rubrum was first described by Castellani in 1910 as Epidermophyton rubrum. He proved that it was one of the most common causes of chronic tinea corporis.

Since then, rubrum has spread throughout the world as the main etiological agent of chronic tinea corporis, tinea unguium, and tinea pedis.

All that being said, Castellani was half right as just recently researchers placed the species rubrum in the Trichophyton genus after confirming it with DNA sequencing.

Besides T. rubrum, there are several other Trichophyton species that are human pathogens.

Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Trichophyton SP

Since different species of the genus Trichophyton can lead to different health issues, the symptoms vary depending on the condition we’re talking about.

However, in the vast majority of cases, Trichophyton sp causes dermatophytosis — a fungal infection of the skin that’s more commonly known as ringworm.

Patients of dermatophytosis typically suffer from the following symptoms:

  • Red, scaly, or raised patches
  • Patches that resemble a ring
  • Patches that ooze or develop a blister
  • Patches that are redder on outside edges
  • Thicker than usual, discoloured, or cracked nails
  • Bald patches that develop when the scalp is affected

Although none of those symptoms are serious, health experts say that dermatophytosis can lead to permanent skin damage if it’s not treated right away.

How You Can Treat Trichophyton SP

Since Trichophyton sp is developing resistance to antibiotics, there’s no knowing whether the medicine that can treat it today will work tomorrow.

Currently, doctors typically pursue a combination therapy of oral terbinafine, oral itraconazole, and intermittent “pulse therapy” with oral itraconazole.

All that being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by a species of the genus Trichophyton, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment.

You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of facing a problem caused by Trichophyton sp?

If you’re now wondering what safety precautions we are talking about, disinfecting your home and workplace with a solution that can kill Trichophyton sp is all you need to do.
