What Is Stachybotrys Chartarum?

Stachybotrys chartarum is a microfungus that produces its conidia in slime heads. It’s also a toxic black mold that can cause severe disease in humans.

History of Stachybotrys Chartarum

In 1837, August Carl Joseph Corda, a Czech physician and mycologist who’s famous for discoveries of multiple popular fungi, erected the genus stachybotrys.

He named the genus stachybotrys after the Greek words σταχυς stakhus, meaning ear of grain, stalk, stick, and βότρυς botrus, meaning cluster or bunch as in grapes and trusses.

The first species of stachybotrys Corda discovered was S. chartarum. A few years later after his discovery, several notable scientists conducted studies on the newly discovered species.

Those studies revealed that S. chartarum is sometimes present in soil and grain, but it’s most often detected in cellulose-rich building materials from damp or water-damaged buildings.

Furthermore, S. chartarum is a slow growing mold that is rarely found in nature and seldom in large-scale living environments produced by human habitation.

Lastly, recent studies have linked the species to the so-called sick building syndrome. But researchers have failed to firmly establish a direct link.

Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Stachybotrys Chartarum

S. chartarum is the only species of the genus stachybotrys that is a pathogen of humans. It causes the disease known as stachybotryotoxicosis.

People who catch stachybotryotoxicosis typically start showing the following symptoms within 2 to 3 days of exposure to stachybotrys chartarum:

  • Fever
  • Rhinitis
  • Dermatitis
  • Leucopenia
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Various chest and upper airway symptoms
  • Certain neurological disorders and inflammatory disorders of the mouth

According to health experts, the symptoms typically last for 3 weeks. However, in some cases, stachybotrys can even be fatal if it’s not treated right away.

How You Can Treat Stachybotrys Chartarum

Since stachybotrys chartarum is developing resistance to antibiotics, there’s no knowing whether the medicine that can treat it today will work tomorrow.

Currently, doctors prescribe different medicines and doses depending on the symptoms and condition of the patient. People who have mild symptoms get mild treatment, while those with serious symptoms get more serious treatments.

All that being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by stachybotrys chartarum, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment.

You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of facing a problem caused by stachybotrys chartarum?
