What Is Sporothrix SP?
Sporothrix is a ubiquitous genus of widespread fungi that are isolated from soil, living and decomposing plants, woods, and peat moss. They belong to the family Ophiostomataceae.
History of Sporothrix SP
In 1896, a medical student named Benjamin Schenck was the first to isolate a species of the genus sporothrix from a human, which is now known as S. schenckii.
Two years later in 1898, Schenck found out that the newly discovered species was a part of an unknown genus with more species. He then named the newly discovered genus “Sporothrix”.
At the start of the 20th century, Hektoen and Perkin, two brilliant scientists, studied the sporothrix genus in detail and published their findings.
Thanks to their studies, we came to know that sporothrix is a widespread genus of fungi, many of which are pathogens of plants, animals, and humans.
Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Sporothrix SP
Since species of the sporothrix genus can cause several health issues, the symptoms vary completely depending on the condition we are talking about.
However, in the vast majority of cases, sporothrix sp leads to sporotrichosis — which is a fungal infection that can affect several body parts.
Cutaneous sporotrichosis is an infection of the skin with the following symptoms:
- A small, painless bump
- Red, pink, or purple skin around the bump
- A bump that gradually grows, eventually becoming so big that it may appear as an ulcer or open sore
Pulmonary sporotrichosis is an infection of the lungs with the following symptoms:
- Shortness of breath
- Cough and chest pain
Another form is disseminated sporotrichosis. Its symptoms vary depending on which body part it affects.
For instance, if it affects the joints, the only symptom is pain similar to rheumatoid arthritis, whereas, if it affects the nervous system, common symptoms are headaches, seizures, and difficulty thinking.
How You Can Treat Sporothrix SP
Since sporothrix sp is developing resistance to antibiotics, there’s no knowing whether the medicine that can treat it today will work tomorrow.
Currently, doctors typically prescribe either itraconazole, taken by mouth for 3 to 6 months, or supersaturated potassium iodide (SSKI) for skin sporotrichosis.
All that being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by a species of the genus sporothrix, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment.
You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.
Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of facing a problem caused by sporothrix sp?
If you’re now wondering what safety precautions we are talking about, disinfecting your home and workplace with a solution that can kill sporothrix sp is all you need to do.
