What is Myrothecium SP?
Myrothecium sp. is a plant pathogen and a mitosporic fungi that is often found on plant-based materials, like paper, cotton, canvas, and even some textiles. It is a mold spore that is able to travel in the air.
About Myrothecium SP
Myrothecium sp. Is a wet spore fungi that can survive short distances traveling through the air to a new host. Although it is a spore that can grow indoors, it is highly uncommon and is more prone to outdoor areas like in the grass, on mushrooms, and buried in damp soil and plants.
Under a scope, it appears as a gray cylindrical spore that has a slight green tinge. Slight striations line the body, while the base is flat and the head is pointed.
Although most strains of the fungi are harmless to humans, it can spread among insects or bugs, and some strains are able to kill them. It’s most common host is plant-based, however.
There are currently as many as 30 species of myrothecium sp. identified, and some are completely harmless while others are extremely toxic.
The fungi is one that grows indoors, and can spread and flourish in damn, moist environments like attics or basements. They can produce mycotoxins, which can lead to a variety of health issues, especially in those with preexisting conditions or those with weakened or vulnerable immune systems.
Originally discovered back in the 1940s, it was first found on tomatoes, and later on coffee plants, rice and soybean plants, and a range of other plant hosts.
Interestingly, it has been studied for use as a natural agent for pest control as it possesses insecticidal properties that potentially inhibit insects and other animals, like the nematode.
Symptoms of Diseases Caused by Myrothecium SP
Although contracting illness from this fungus has been almost non-existent, there have been some cases of ocular contact that led to keratosis in a small number of individuals.
However, as with any spore or fungus, dangers from mold can wreak havoc on weakened immune systems causing infection, fever, respiratory issues, and serious illness in vulnerable populations.
How You Can Treat Myrothecium SP
Antifungal medications are likely to be effective in treating myrothecium, as with any fungal infection. More importantly, prevention and preservation are the biggest steps towards limiting the growth of mold in a house or office, as is disinfecting and protecting the air you work in to limit spore transfer.
