What Is Mycobacterium Tuberculosis?

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB) by attacking your lungs, kidneys, spine, or brain. So just like a virus, it too can lead to potentially life-threatening diseases.

Once you get infected by this bacterium, you get one of the two forms of TB:

  1. Latent TB: If you suffer from this form of TB, you have the germs in your body, but your immune system keeps them from spreading. So you won’t be contagious and you won’t suffer any symptoms. However, that does not mean you’re safe. The infection will still be alive and will become active if your immune system becomes weaker.
  2. Active TB: Once the disease is active, the germs multiply and make you sick. You become contagious and may suffer from symptoms, including fatigue, fevers, chills, night sweats, unintentional weight loss, chest pain or pain with breathing, and hemoptysis (coughing up blood).

Currently, TB is the leading infectious disease killer in the world — with the exception of covid-19 this year.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.8 billion people, which is close to one quarter of the world’s population, were infected with mycobacterium tuberculosis in 2018.

Of those 1.8 billion people, 10 million suffered TB and 1.5 million died.

So this bacterium is as deadly as they come.

Protect Yourself and Others

Unlike covid-19, mycobacterium tuberculosis is a bacterium, yet that does not mean it’s not a significant threat.

As we discussed earlier, this bacterium affects nearly a quarter of the entire world’s population and kills over 1.5 million people every year. So everyone’s at risk.

That is why taking preventative measures to protect yourself and others from this bacterium is a necessity.
