What Is H1N1?

Also known as swine flu, H1N1 is a novel influenza virus that was first detected in 2009. That same year, the World Health Organization declared that it had reached the level of a pandemic. It spread across the globe in a similar way to how seasonal flu viruses do.

To understand what is H1N1, we have to look at its origins. Laboratory tests discovered that the virus’s genes look similar to flu viruses prevalent in pigs. However, further tests found that it has its differences. There are genes within H1N1 that exist in pigs, birds, and humans. This has led to scientists calling it a “quadruple reassortant” virus.

The most common symptoms someone with H1N1 will experience are the following:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Congested nose
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Body chills
  • Fatigue

Some people also experience vomiting and diarrhea, although those symptoms are less common. In extreme cases, death can result. With 60 million cases in the US and over 12,000 deaths within the first year of it spreading, this virus has been the worst viral outbreak in recent history, prior to COVID-19. Symptoms start occurring within 5-7 days of initial exposure to the virus.
