What Is Geotrichum SP?

Geotrichum is a genus of fungi with over 100 species that are found worldwide in soil, water, air, plants, cereals, dairy products, and sewage.

What Is Geotrichum SP?

In 1809, a German naturalist and botanist named Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link described the genus Geotrichum to accommodate the species G. candidum found on decaying leaves.

Since then, over 130 taxa of the genus have been described and hundreds of synonyms have been generated.

Furthermore, the genus includes over 100 species, some of which are welcome and even considered desirable, while others are popular plant pathogens.

For instance, skilled cheesemakers create conditions favorable for the formation of a G. candidum rind on certain goat’s milk and cow’s milk cheeses.

According to them and people who have tasted such cheeses, the rind is the most flavorful part.

However, the pathogens in the genus outnumber the useful species by a landslide. For every useful species, there are over five pathogens of plants, animals, or humans.

Out of all the pathogens, the most clinically relevant species is Geotrichum capitatum because it has been associated with sporadic outbreaks.

Moreover, an infection caused by Geotrichum sp can lead to severe immunosuppression, especially in hematological malignancies as acute leukemia.

Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Geotrichum SP

Since different species of the genus Geotrichum can lead to different health issues, the symptoms vary depending on the condition we are talking about.

However, in the vast majority of cases, Geotrichum sp causes geotrichosis — which is a sporadic, infectious, and opportunistic mycotic disease with the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Severe cough
  • Leukocytosis
  • Yellow sputum
  • Fine to medium rales
  • Light, thick, grey sputum

Although none of those symptoms are serious, health experts say that geotrichosis can lead to more serious issues if it’s not treated right away.

How You Can Treat Geotrichum SP

Since Geotrichum sp is developing resistance to antibiotics, there’s no knowing whether the medicine that can treat it today will work tomorrow.

Currently, doctors typically pursue combination therapy of amphotericin B and itraconazole to treat an infection caused by any species of the Geotrichum genus.

All that being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by Geotrichum sp, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment.

You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of facing a disease caused by Geotrichum sp?

If you’re now wondering what safety precautions we are talking about, disinfecting your home and workplace with a solution that can kill Geotrichum sp is all you need to do.
