What Is Corynebacterium SP?

Corynebacterium is a genus of widespread bacteria that are aerobic, gram-positive, and rod-shaped or club-shaped. Although most of its species are desirable, some are pathogens.

History of Corynebacterium SP

In 1896, Lehmann and Neumann created the genus corynebacterium as a taxonomic group to contain the bacterial rods responsible for causing diphtheria.

They defined the genus based on its morphological characteristics by conducting 16S-rRNA studies to prove that the corynebacterium genus belongs to the subdivision of gram-positive eubacteria.

Those same 16S-rRNA studies also proved that it has a high G:C content and a close phylogenetic relationship to the genera nocardia, arthrobacter, streptomyces, and mycobacterium.

Although only a couple of species of corynebacterium were known back then, today, there are over a hundred recognized species — most of which are pathogens.

For instance, C. diphtheriae is the only documented cause of the disease diphtheria, and C. minutissimum is the only documented cause of erythrasma.

Furthermore, we also know now that the vast majority of corynebacterium species occur commonly in nature in the soil, water, plants, and food products.

Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Corynebacterium SP

Since different species of the genus corynebacterium can lead to different diseases, the symptoms vary depending on the condition we’re talking about.

However, in the vast majority of cases, corynebacterium sp causes diphtheria — which is a serious bacterial infection with the following symptoms:

  • Fever and chills
  • Nasal discharge
  • A sore throat or hoarseness
  • Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
  • Swollen glands (enlarged lymph nodes) in the neck
  • A thick, gray membrane covering the throat and tonsils

Although none of those symptoms are serious, health experts say that diphtheria can lead to more serious conditions if it’s not treated right away.

How You Can Treat Corynebacterium SP

Since corynebacterium sp is developing resistance to antibiotics, there’s no knowing whether the medicine that can treat it today will work tomorrow.

Currently, doctors typically prescribe an antitoxin or antibiotics like penicillin or erythromycin to help kill bacteria in the body, clearing up the infection caused by corynebacterium sp.

All that being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by corynebacterium sp, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment.

You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of facing a problem caused by corynebacterium sp?

If you’re now wondering what safety precautions we are talking about, disinfecting your home and workplace with a solution that can kill corynebacterium sp is all you need to do.
