Brucella Intermedia is a bacteria that leads to infected animals and people developing brucellosis. It was first discovered in British soldiers who died in Malta around the turn of the 20th century. It originated as a bacterial infection in animals, and is commonly spread by the ingesting of raw or unpasteurized dairy products. Occasionally, this bacteria may spread through the air, or direct contact with an infected animal.
Brucella Intermedia can lead to experiencing a number of symptoms, usually within 2-4 weeks of being infected. The initial symptoms are generally the following:
⦁ Excessive sweating
⦁ General malaise
⦁ Joint, muscle, or back pain
There are additional symptoms that can linger for extend periods of time. Occasionally, some symptoms will never go away, or may recur. This includes the following:
⦁ Scrotum swelling
⦁ Heart swelling
⦁ Liver swelling
⦁ Spleen swelling
⦁ Chronic fatigue
⦁ Neurological issues
Before treatment can occur, a person will have to first become diagnosed with brucellosis stemming from infection with Brucella Intermedia. This is done using tests conducted that look for the bacteria within the blood, bone marrow, and other bodily fluids. Additionally, a blood test may also be conducted to identify antibodies that exist against the bacteria. After identifying the bacteria within the body, antibiotics will be prescribed to use against the bacteria. The recovery time lasts anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
The most successful way to prevent getting infected by Brucella Intermedia is to avoid consuming any of the following:
⦁ Undercooked or uncooked meat
⦁ Unpasteurized dairy products like milk, cheese, and ice cream
Additionally, you should avoid directly handling animal tissue. People who hunt or herd animals should
protect themselves by wearing rubber gloves, goggles, and gowns or aprons.
Taking these steps will help ensure that this dangerous bacteria coming from infected animals will not get into your eyes or any cuts on your skin.
Antibiotics come as close to a cure as is possible. However, even with antibiotics, 2% of people who become infected with this bacteria will die. This comes out to approximately 10,000 deaths annually. While there are few deaths, there are nearly 500,000 infections globally every year. That is why prevention is the most important step to take to protect yourself from Brucella Intermedia.
Brucella Intermedia is a bacterial infection you can get from practically any animal, and the likelihood of getting it significantly increases if you come into close contact with animals that are infected. If you are around animals or animal products, you may need to protect yourself and others.
