What Is Botrytis SP?

Botrytis is a genus of anamorphic fungi that belongs to the group hyphomycetes. It has over 30 species and it’s a part of the family Sclerotiniaceae.

History of Botrytis SP

Did you know the genus Botrytis is one of the first described genera of fungi?

Micheli erected it in 1729 and named it after the Greek word for “bunch of grape berries”. Why did Micheli name it botrytis? Historians believe he did so because it can lead to the “grey mould” in grapes.

Almost a century after the discovery by Micheli, the world started paying more attention to botrytis as several studies were conducted on it worldwide.

Those studies revealed there are several species of botrytis, and some of them are more harmful than others. Up to date, the most harmful one is cinerea.

  1. cinerea can affect a wide variety of plants, ranging from ornamentals to fruits and vegetables. It can affect so many plants because it is a complex with an array of strains with great genetic variance.
  2. cinerea has been shown to cause the following diseases in different plants:
  • Onion neck rot
  • Calyx end rot in apples
  • Grey mould in seedlings and strawberry

Furthermore, B. cinerea can also cause an infection that may first appear as a whitish growth, but later on turn into grey or grey-brown. Besides the color, such infections have the following symptoms:

  • Dark spots
  • Rots and blights
  • Wilting of part of the plant

Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Botrytis SP

As we mentioned earlier, some species of botrytis can cause a wide variety of disease in plants. But what we didn’t mention was that they can also cause hay fever — which has the following symptoms:

  • Loss of smell
  • Sneezing or coughing
  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Red, itchy, or watery eyes
  • Itchy throat, mouth, nose or ears
  • Pain around your temples and forehead

Although none of those symptoms are serious, if hay fever is not treated right away, it can lead to more serious issues that can cause permanent damage.

How You Can Treat Botrytis SP

Besides hay fever, some species of botrytis can lead to other health issues, such as asthma and keratomycosis. So the treatment depends on the condition we are talking about.

That being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by botrytis sp, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment. You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of catching a disease caused by botrytis sp?

If you’re now wondering what safety precautions we are talking about, disinfecting your home and workplace with a solution that can kill botrytis sp is all you need to do.
