What is Bacillus Cereus?

Bacillus cereus var. mycoies is a type of bacteria discovered in the late 19th century. This bacteria is commonly found within soil, on vegetables, raw foods, and processed foods. Getting infected with this bacteria can lead to food poisoning, especially when foods are prepared without proper refrigeration, primarily when food has been left out for several hours. Other foods that have been found to contain bacillus cereus include boiled rice, fried rice, vanilla sauce, custards, and soups.

Symptoms of Bacillus Cereus

There is currently limited information regarding infection due to Bacillus cereus. However, if contaminated food is ingested, it may be possible to become infected and experience unwanted side effects. The symptoms may include the following:

  • Headaches
  • Constipation
  • Non-bloody Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

The incubation period for Bacillus cereus is between 4 and 16 hours, while symptoms may last anywhere between 12 and 24 hours. Symptoms like nausea and vomiting will occur within 1-5 hours after ingesting food that has been infected. While diarrhea is a symptom, it only occurs rarely.

Treatment

Since Bacillus cereus is a bacteria, an infection can usually be treated by using antibiotics. The use of antibiotics should be started as soon as there is a reason to believe you are infected with it. However, there is an increasing number of antibiotics that are unable to treat infections due to growing antibiotic resistance. A doctor may order special tests to find out whether the bacteria are antibiotic-resistant. It is advisable to take antibiotics for several weeks.

Prevention

The best way to prevent infection from Bacillus cereus is to practice safe eating habits and exercising proper sanitation. Avoid eating foods that have been left out at room temperature for too long. Be very careful regarding what you eat that comes from the water, as well as what comes from the ground. You should always make sure you are eating safely and practicing good hygiene. This will protect you from getting infected with Bacillus cereus, along with many other bacterial infections.

Cure?

The cure for Bacillus cereus is the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics can be used as a cure for this bacterial infection, although there often need to be multiple antibiotics used together to cure the bacterial infection, especially in older adults and young children who have become infected.
