Alternaria SP

What Is Alternaria SP?

Alternaria sp are ascomycete fungi, plant pathogens, and allergens that cause hay fever or hypersensitivity reactions that can sometimes lead to asthma.

History of Alternaria SP

Alternaria was established in 1817 with A. alternata as the type isolate.

Since the sexual stage for the vast majority of alternaria species was unidentified, the genus was classified into the division of mitosporic fungi and the phylum Fungi Imperfecti.

In the late 19th century, research revealed there are 299 species in the genus alternaria, which are omnipresent in the environment and are a natural part of fungal flora around the globe.

The same research also revealed alternaria species are pests, pathogens, and normal agents of decay and decomposition that are typically found in soil and water.

According to recent sports, at least 20% of agricultural spoilage is caused by alternaria species and most severe losses may reach up to 80% of yield.

Like that isn’t bad enough, alternaria species can also cause many health disorders in humans, including rare allergies, serious infections, and hay fever.

Furthermore, these fungi often produce a variety of toxic compounds. However, the effects of those toxic compounds on plants, animals, and humans are unknown as of now.

Symptoms of Diseases Caused By Alternaria SP

Alternaria sp typically leads to hay fever, which has the following symptoms:

  • Loss of smell
  • Sneezing and coughing
  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Red, itchy, or watery eyes
  • Itchy throat, mouth, nose or ears
  • Pain around your temples and forehead

Although none of those symptoms are serious, health experts say that hay fever can lead to more serious issues if it’s not treated by a doctor right away.

How You Can Treat Alternaria SP

Since alternaria sp is developing resistance to antibiotics, there’s no knowing whether the medicines that can treat it today will work tomorrow.

Currently, doctors typically recommend steroid suppression or reduction to resolve an infection caused by any species of the genus alternaria.

However, if you have an onychomycosis, cutaneous, or subcutaneous infection, your doctor may prescribe itraconazole because it’s the best antifungal drug for such infections.

All that being said, unless you’re already suffering from a disease caused by alternaria sp, you shouldn’t be worrying about the treatment. You should be worrying about how to prevent the disease.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So why not take safety precautions right now, so you won’t have to face the risk of catching a disease caused by alternaria sp?

If you’re now wondering what safety precautions we are talking about, disinfecting your home and workplace with a solution that can kill alternaria sp is all you need to do.
